Brendan Black, 26, of Valparaiso, IN, Obituary, Death: Brendan Drew Black, age 26, of Valparaiso, Indiana, formerly of Hobart, passed away on Friday, April 25, 2025. A passionate athlete, devoted father, and deeply loyal friend, Brendan’s passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched with his love, energy, and unwavering commitment to those he held dear.
Born and raised in Hobart, Brendan was a proud graduate of Hobart High School, Class of 2017. During his high school years, he made history as a State Champion in Wrestling—a title that reflected his grit, discipline, and fierce spirit. He was also a dedicated member of the Brickie Football team, pouring his heart into every game. Brendan’s wrestling career led him to compete at the collegiate level for Michigan State University, where he further developed his skill and character both on and off the mat.
After college, Brendan found his professional calling in carpentry, working with Local #1005. Whether in athletics or in his trade, Brendan was known for his work ethic and integrity. He approached every task with determination and pride.
But beyond his accomplishments, Brendan’s greatest joy and purpose in life came from being a partner to Olivia VanNieulande and the loving father to his two daughters, Drew and Charlie. Brendan’s bond with his girls was unbreakable. He cherished every moment with them—whether pushing swings at the park, sharing stories, or simply being present for their smiles. His daughters were his entire world, and he loved them with a depth that words can barely express.
Brendan is survived by a large and loving family: his partner Olivia; daughters Drew and Charlie; mother, Kylee (Cassandra Zaremba) Bult-Black; “other mother,” Kim Fricke; and his extended family, the Triana family. He is also survived by his maternal great-grandmother, Barbara (James) Riley; grandparents, Jayne and Jim “Dude” Spencer; father, Shawn Black; paternal great-grandmother, Barb Thompson; grandparents, Robin and Robert Black; siblings, Anna Black and David Anderson; and stepmother, Jackie (late Allen) Blake.
His family also includes uncle Matt (Nicole) Spencer; aunts Kim (Stephen) Burke, Sharaya (Monroe) Timm, and JJ (Khalfani) Hollins; godparents Jessica Cadle and Nathan Dykes; and many more beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and coaches. Brendan was preceded in death by great-great-grandmother Carrigan; great-grandfathers Buddy Thompson and Peter Bult; uncle Nick Spencer; cousin Amber Dykes; and uncle Greg Kolisz.
Brendan lived with heart and faith. His spirituality guided his actions, and his kindness left a lasting impression on all who met him. He was known for his loyalty, warmth, and generous nature—traits that made him not only admired but deeply loved.
